Exploring socially relevant approaches and increasing audiences was an important aspect of the Kunst & Zwalm 2011 biennial. The sculpture trail featured an outsider art project in partnership with organisations which are seeking to promote inclusion and diversity in the arts. The starting point of the project was the work of Sylvain Cosijns, an artist with a learning disability from Zwalm.
Sylvain Cosijns’ work also formed the basis of the cycling jersey project. A unique jersey was created as for the Tour of Flanders 2011, which included the village of Zwalm. The cycling jersey was produced in collaboration with Kiwanis Land Van Rhode, a service club, as a promotion tool for the Kunst & Zwalm 2011 Outsiderproject. The jersey was also on sale during the Biennal, with all the profits going to socio-cultural organisations and causes in Zwalm.
