LCP has supported the resource centres and their activities at aspex, Fabrica and la malterie. This has enabled them to develop their programmes and continue to provide quality services to support local artists. The LCP project has also enabled the sharing of expertise and opportunities between the centres.
Aspex supports emerging artists in Portsmouth and beyond through a programme of artist focused activities, including one to one surgeries, peer review, workshops and symposia. The aim is to encourage critical engagement, self-assessment and a proactive approach.
The artist professional development programme has changed at aspex over the life of the project. When LCP began aspex was home to ARC (Artists’ Resource Centre), which included a resource and an artists professional development programme. However, as of 2012 this programme has been rebranded as Artists at Aspex and is more integrated with the gallery’s main programme. Although currently the resource centre is closed, the professional development programme continues.
The Artist Resource (AR) at Fabrica is a drop-in information facility designed to support the professional development of visual artists who are interested in Fabrica’s programme and approach. Information in the reference library covers topics such as fundraising, opportunities, volunteering, exhibition spaces, studios and international working. The AR runs regular peer review sessions and 1-2-1 surgeries, as well as other artist professional development events.
The artist resource centre provides information, guidance and support for creative practitioners, with the aim to develop a strong network of artists and encourage the sharing of information and ideas. It is the first resource in France that concerns the visual arts. Every year, the resource centre welcomes approximately 250 people, some to individual meetings and some to group professional and vocational training sessions.
